The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating a death in southwest Edmonton after a series of Friday night collision reports ended in an officer shooting a suspect.
Edmonton police surrounded a residence on Christie Vista S.W. after finding a damaged vehicle in an open garage that matched the description of three hit-and-run reports called in late Friday night and early Saturday morning.
Police say a 59-year-old man came out of the residence with edged weapons before an officer shot him.
He was declared dead on scene despite life-saving measures.
Prior to the death, just before midnight on Friday, police were called by the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services after a firetruck was involved in a crash with another vehicle.
Officers say the driver tried to assault emergency responders with a blunt object before fleeing the scene.
Shortly after, police received two hit-and-run reports in southwest Edmonton involving the same vehicle.
No one else was injured during the confrontation on Christie Vista S.W.
Edmonton police notified the Police Review Commission, which directed ASIRT to begin an investigation.
The Edmonton Police Service says it can’t comment on the matter any further while the investigation proceeds.
