Salmonella Concerns Prompt Recall of Select Whole Foods Salsas and Guacamoles in Ontario

A number of fresh salsa and guacamole products sold at Whole Foods Market stores in Ontario have been recalled over concerns they may be contaminated with Salmonella, prompting health officials to advise consumers not to consume the affected products. The recall was issued as a precautionary measure after a potential risk of bacterial contamination was identified during food safety monitoring.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products are urged to carefully check the product names, package details, and best-before dates against the official recall notice. Anyone in possession of the affected items should either dispose of them safely or return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Authorities have also warned that food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, making it difficult for consumers to identify affected products without checking the recall information.
According to health officials, Salmonella infection can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and headache, usually appearing between six and 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. Most healthy people recover without treatment within a few days, but severe illness can occur in infants, young children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In some cases, hospitalization may be required if the infection spreads beyond the intestines.
Public health authorities advise anyone who has eaten the recalled products and experiences symptoms of foodborne illness to seek medical attention promptly, especially if symptoms become severe or persistent. Consumers are also encouraged to thoroughly wash and sanitize refrigerators, countertops, cutting boards, utensils, and any other surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products to help prevent cross-contamination.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is overseeing the recall and continues to investigate the source of the potential contamination. As part of the investigation, additional products could be added to the recall if new information becomes available. Officials emphasized that food recalls are precautionary measures intended to protect public health and reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
Consumers are encouraged to monitor the CFIA’s official recall notices for updates and follow recommended food safety practices, including proper food handling, storage, and hygiene, to minimize the risk of Salmonella infection. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains ongoing and further information will be released if necessary.
