Canadian Mountaineer Missing During Matterhorn Record Attempt
A search operation is underway after Canadian mountaineer and elite skyrunner Kalie McCrystal went missing while preparing for a mountain-running record attempt on the Matterhorn, one of Europe’s most iconic peaks. Athletics Canada confirmed that McCrystal was last seen on Tuesday while climbing the Italian side of the 4,481-metre mountain, which straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy.
According to Athletics Canada, McCrystal is a highly experienced mountaineer with extensive technical climbing and high-altitude expertise. She has successfully climbed the Matterhorn before, and officials emphasized that this was not her first ascent. The organization, however, did not disclose details about the specific mountain-running record she was attempting to achieve.
Italian mountain rescue teams launched an extensive search after she was reported missing, with helicopters and ground crews combing the rugged alpine terrain. Search efforts have been complicated by steep cliffs, unpredictable weather, and difficult mountain conditions. Authorities have not yet located McCrystal, and the operation remains ongoing.
Originally from Squamish, British Columbia, McCrystal is well known in the international skyrunning community for her endurance, technical climbing skills, and previous achievements in mountain racing. Friends and fellow athletes have described her as an accomplished mountain runner, lawyer, and a passionate advocate for women in mountain sports.
Athletics Canada said its thoughts are with McCrystal’s family, friends, and the wider mountain-running community during the difficult time. The organization expressed hope for her safe return and thanked Italian mountain rescue personnel for their continued efforts. McCrystal’s family is also working closely with rescue authorities as the search continues.
