More Than 130,000 Galanz Retro Refrigerators Recalled Over Fire Risk; 1 Death Reported

More than 130,000 Galanz Retro refrigerators have been recalled in Canada and the United States because internal electrical components can short-circuit and catch fire, creating a potential fire and burn hazard. The recall affects approximately 10,045 refrigerators in Canada and about 121,680 units in the United States. The Canadian recall was announced by Health Canada on Sept. 24, 2026. The affected Canadian refrigerators are red Galanz Retro models measuring approximately 147 centimetres high, 61 centimetres deep and 53 centimetres wide. They have a capacity of about 7.6 cubic feet, with three adjustable glass shelves, a drawer and a separate freezer compartment. The Canadian recall applies specifically to model GLR76TRDER, including sub-models BCD-215VF-C-62H and BCD-215VF-D-62H. Only units with date codes from December 2018 through December 2020 are affected. The model number and date code can be found on a white label on the upper-left corner of the back of the refrigerator. Health Canada says the electrical components inside the affected refrigerators can develop a short circuit and ignite. This creates a potential fire and burn hazard for consumers and their homes. As of Sept. 21, 2026, the company had received two incident reports in Canada, although no injuries had been reported in Canada at that time. The U.S. recall involves a substantially larger number of units and follows reports of fires involving the affected refrigerators. One death has been reported in the United States in connection with the recalled product. Consumers who own one of the affected refrigerators are advised to stop using it immediately and unplug it. Galanz is offering a free in-home repair by a qualified technician to address the electrical problem. Consumers should not attempt to repair the appliance themselves. Consumers should first check the model number and date code on the back of their refrigerator to determine whether their unit is included in the recall. If it is affected, they should contact Galanz and arrange the free repair. Health Canada also reminds consumers that recalled products cannot legally be sold, redistributed or given away in Canada. The refrigerators were manufactured in China and were sold in Canada between December 2018 and December 2020. The recall is focused only on the specific model, sub-models and date codes identified by Health Canada, meaning not every Galanz refrigerator is affected. Consumers who experience a fire, injury or other safety incident involving the recalled refrigerator are encouraged to report it to Health Canada. The agency uses consumer reports to monitor recalled products and identify potential safety risks. The recall serves as a reminder for owners of older appliances to check their model numbers against official recall notices, particularly when an electrical defect could create a fire risk.
