Severe storms that swept through Edmonton and surrounding communities since late May have resulted in an estimated $230 million in insured damages, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). The losses stem from two major storms that brought torrential rain, flash flooding, hail, and damaging winds to the region.
The IBC said most insurance claims have come from homeowners, with flooded basements, damaged roofs, and water intrusion accounting for a significant share of the losses. Businesses and vehicle owners were also heavily affected, particularly by flooding and hail damage.
Insurance experts described the storms as among the most destructive weather events to hit the Edmonton area in recent years. They urged residents to document damage, contact their insurers promptly, and review their policies to ensure they have adequate protection against flooding and severe weather.
The storms caused widespread disruption across the city, including flooded roads, damaged infrastructure, and temporary closures of several public facilities. Cleanup and repairs are continuing as many affected residents work to recover from the extensive damage.
