Honda has issued a major recall affecting hundreds of thousands of vehicles in Canada and the United States due to a defect that could prevent the rearview camera image from displaying properly, increasing the risk of a crash while reversing. The recall primarily affects 2018–2022 Honda Odyssey minivans.
According to safety regulators, the problem is caused by water intrusion into the rearview camera assembly, which can lead to corrosion of internal electronic components. As a result, the backup camera image may fail to appear on the vehicle’s display when the driver shifts into reverse.
Honda said it will notify affected owners and replace the faulty rearview camera with an updated unit free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to begin mailing in late August, and customers can also check whether their vehicle is included in the recall using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
The company noted that only a small percentage of the recalled vehicles are expected to have the defect, but the recall has been issued as a precaution to ensure driver and passenger safety. Honda encourages owners to arrange repairs as soon as they receive their recall notice.
Owners who experience issues with their rearview camera before receiving an official recall notice are advised to contact their nearest authorized Honda dealership. The company also recommends checking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Honda’s recall website using the vehicle’s VIN to confirm whether their vehicle is affected and to schedule repairs promptly.
This is one of several large safety recalls announced by Honda in recent months as the automaker continues to work with safety regulators to identify and address potential defects.
