Hope Mission Plans Expansion of Permanent Shelter Services in Edmonton
Hope Mission is proposing a major expansion of its permanent shelter services in southeast Edmonton as the city continues to face a growing homelessness crisis. The organization has submitted plans to convert part of its existing warehouse and thrift store property into a year-round emergency shelter, with the proposal currently under review by Edmonton City Council.
If approved, the project would add approximately 120 permanent shelter beds, creating additional space for individuals experiencing homelessness. Hope Mission says existing shelters are frequently operating at or near capacity, making it increasingly difficult to accommodate the rising number of people seeking emergency housing.
The proposed facility would be located near Argyll Road and 75 Street, an area the organization says is well suited because of its existing infrastructure and proximity to essential services. Hope Mission believes expanding shelter services beyond the downtown core will improve access to care while reducing pressure on other emergency shelters across Edmonton.
In addition to overnight accommodation, the expanded shelter would provide meals, health and mental health supports, addiction recovery services, housing assistance, employment resources, and case management. Hope Mission says the goal is not only to provide temporary shelter but also to help individuals transition into stable, long-term housing.
The proposal has received mixed reactions from the community. Supporters argue that additional shelter space is urgently needed as homelessness continues to rise, while some nearby residents and business owners have expressed concerns about safety, increased traffic, and the potential impact on surrounding neighbourhoods. City officials have said these concerns will be considered as part of the public consultation process.
Hope Mission has stated that it will continue working with local residents, businesses, law enforcement, and community organizations to address neighbourhood concerns and ensure the facility operates safely. The organization also plans to implement security measures, on-site staffing, and community outreach programs to minimize potential impacts.
Edmonton City Council is expected to make a decision on the rezoning application after reviewing public feedback and recommendations from city planners. If approved, the expansion would represent one of the city’s largest recent investments in permanent shelter capacity and could significantly strengthen Edmonton’s response to homelessness as demand for support services continues to grow.
