Ontario Science Centre Lays Off 30 Workers, Entire Science Department Eliminated

The Ontario Science Centre has laid off 30 employees, including its entire science department, as the organization undergoes a major restructuring, The Canadian Press reported.
CEO Paul Kortenaar informed employees about the changes during a meeting on Thursday. The restructuring will eliminate the centre’s science department, live exhibits, business development department and security positions. Kortenaar said new roles are expected to become available in the future.
The layoffs come as the Ontario Science Centre continues operating from an interim location following the closure of its longtime Don Mills Road facility in June 2024. The original building was closed after concerns were raised about deteriorating infrastructure, including problems with its roof and other building systems.
The provincial government has been moving ahead with plans for a new Ontario Science Centre at Ontario Place, while the organization continues to provide science programming through interim facilities and other formats.
The elimination of the entire science department has sparked concern among former and current employees and members of the public, particularly given the institution’s long-standing role in science education and public engagement.
The Ontario Science Centre has been a major Ontario landmark for more than five decades, providing hands-on science experiences, educational programs and exhibits for children, families and students.
The latest restructuring represents another major change for the organization as it transitions away from its former Don Mills location and prepares for its future facility at Ontario Place.
