Search Continues for 32 Missing Canadians, Including Residents of Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa

Search and rescue operations are continuing for 32 Canadians reported missing near the Nepal–China border, including residents of Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, following severe flooding and landslides that struck the mountainous region earlier this week.
Nepalese authorities said the Canadians were part of tourist groups traveling in areas close to the border when heavy monsoon rains triggered flash floods and landslides, damaging roads, bridges, and communication networks. Rescue teams have been working in difficult terrain, using helicopters and ground crews to search for those still unaccounted for.
Canadian officials have confirmed they are in close contact with Nepalese authorities and are providing consular assistance to the families of those affected. Global Affairs Canada said it is closely monitoring the situation and continues to gather information as rescue efforts progress.
Emergency responders have managed to rescue several stranded travelers from affected areas, but challenging weather conditions and blocked access routes have slowed search operations. Authorities say the number of missing and rescued individuals could change as communication is restored with isolated communities.
Officials have urged Canadians in Nepal to follow local emergency instructions, avoid unnecessary travel in flood-affected regions, and register with Canadian consular services if they require assistance. Family members seeking information have also been advised to contact Global Affairs Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre.
The disaster has caused widespread destruction across parts of northern Nepal, with swollen rivers washing away roads, homes, and infrastructure. Local authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage while emergency crews race against time to locate those still missing.
Canadian officials said they remain hopeful that more survivors will be found and pledged to continue working with Nepalese authorities until every missing Canadian has been accounted for.
