Search continues for missing Canadian mountaineer in Italy as family holds onto hope
The search for missing Canadian mountaineer Kalie McCrystal in Italy has been suspended due to dangerous weather and difficult mountain conditions, but her family remains hopeful that she will be found.
McCrystal, a seasoned mountaineer and trail runner from British Columbia, was attempting a record-setting ascent and descent of Matterhorn, one of Europe’s most challenging peaks, when she was last seen on September 1.
Italian rescue teams launched an extensive search operation using helicopters, specialized mountain rescue crews, drones, and mobile phone data. However, despite several days of searching, no trace of McCrystal has been found. Authorities said the search has been paused because of adverse weather conditions but could resume if new information emerges.
Friends and fellow climbers describe McCrystal as an experienced athlete with extensive knowledge of high-altitude mountaineering. She had successfully climbed Matterhorn multiple times in the past and was well prepared for challenging alpine conditions, making her disappearance particularly unexpected.
McCrystal’s mother and sister have travelled to Italy to assist with efforts and remain in close contact with local authorities. Family members continue to appeal for information while expressing hope that she will be found safely.
Italian officials say the investigation remains active, and rescue teams are prepared to resume search operations if conditions improve or new leads become available.
