Tornado warnings issued for parts of southern Ontario were lifted Saturday afternoon after severe thunderstorms moved through the region without any immediate reports of confirmed tornadoes. Environment Canada had earlier warned that a dangerous storm capable of producing a tornado was tracking southeast across communities including Milton, Mississauga, and Oakville, prompting emergency alerts and urging residents to seek shelter immediately.
The weather agency warned that the storm could also bring damaging wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Residents were advised to take cover in basements or interior rooms and avoid windows until the storm had passed. Boaters were also urged to head to shore as quickly as possible.
As the storm weakened and moved out of the area, Environment Canada cancelled the tornado warnings, signalling that the immediate tornado threat had ended. However, officials cautioned that severe thunderstorms can still produce hazardous weather, including localized flooding, strong winds, and lightning, and encouraged the public to continue monitoring weather updates.
The brief warnings came as southern Ontario experienced another round of unstable summer weather, highlighting the importance of staying alert during rapidly changing storm conditions. Environment Canada continues to monitor weather systems across the region and advises residents to remain prepared for additional alerts if conditions deteriorate.
