WestJet is allowing passengers travelling on certain dates to change or cancel their flights without an additional fee as the airline continues negotiations with the union representing its cabin crew and prepares for the possibility of labour disruption.
The Calgary-based airline announced that passengers scheduled to travel between July 30 and August 4, 2026, can make a one-time change or cancellation without a fee. WestJet said the temporary policy is intended to provide travellers with greater flexibility and certainty during the busy summer travel period.
The move comes as WestJet continues contract negotiations with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents approximately 4,400 cabin crew members at the airline. Flight attendants recently voted 99.4 per cent in favour of a strike mandate, with job action potentially possible as early as August 2.
WestJet emphasized that a strike vote does not necessarily mean a strike will take place. The airline says negotiations are continuing and that it remains optimistic an agreement can be reached that recognizes the contribution of cabin crew while maintaining the airline’s long-term sustainability.
The airline also noted that WestJet Encore flights operated with Q400 aircraft and WestJet codeshare flights operated by partner airlines would not be affected in the event of a labour disruption.
Passengers with flexible travel plans are being encouraged to review their booking options. Those who booked vacation packages through WestJet Vacations, Sunwing Vacations or Vacances WestJet Québec will receive information directly from their vacation provider about available options.
WestJet says it will continue providing updates as negotiations progress. Travellers with flights around the potential labour-action period are advised to monitor their flight status and the airline’s travel advisories before heading to the airport.
