Tennessee Governor Proposes Renaming Nashville Airport After Dolly Parton
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has unveiled a proposal to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of country music icon Dolly Parton, describing the move as a tribute to one of the state’s most influential and beloved figures. If approved, the airport would officially become Dolly Parton Nashville International Airport, recognizing her decades-long contributions to music, philanthropy, education, and Tennessee’s global reputation.
Governor Lee said Parton has represented Tennessee with “grace, humility, and extraordinary talent,” becoming one of the most recognizable ambassadors for the state. He noted that her achievements extend well beyond the entertainment industry, making her a symbol of compassion, generosity, and community service.
Parton, who was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world’s best-selling music artists. With a career spanning more than six decades, she has released dozens of chart-topping albums, earned multiple Grammy Awards, and written timeless classics including Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You. Her influence has transcended country music, making her one of the most respected entertainers in the world.
Beyond her musical success, Parton is widely admired for her charitable work. Through the Imagination Library, she has donated hundreds of millions of books to children across several countries, promoting literacy and early childhood education. She also played a significant role in supporting communities affected by the 2016 Great Smoky Mountains wildfires and contributed funding that aided research leading to one of the first COVID-19 vaccines.
The proposal has received widespread attention from residents, business leaders, and fans, many of whom believe naming the airport after Parton would be a fitting recognition of her lifelong service to Tennessee. Supporters argue that her name is synonymous with the state’s culture, hospitality, and creative spirit, while others have highlighted the economic and tourism value associated with her global popularity.
The airport renaming proposal must undergo review by state lawmakers and the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority before it can be formally adopted. If approved, Nashville International Airport would join a select group of major airports named after prominent public figures, reflecting Parton’s enduring legacy and remarkable impact on music, education, philanthropy, and public life.
Despite her worldwide fame, Parton has remained closely connected to her Tennessee roots, continuing to invest in local communities and charitable initiatives. The proposed renaming is being viewed as a lasting tribute to a woman whose influence has shaped not only country music but also generations of people through her humanitarian efforts.
