European Football Hits Record €40 Billion Revenue as Growth Begins to Slow

European football has crossed the €40 billion revenue mark for the first time, reaching a record €40.2 billion during the 2024–25 season, according to Deloitte’s latest Annual Review of Football Finance. While the milestone highlights the sport’s continued commercial success, the report warns that the rapid pace of financial growth is beginning to slow.
The combined revenue of Europe’s Big Five leagues—the English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Germany’s Bundesliga, Italy’s Serie A, and France’s Ligue 1—rose to €21.6 billion, accounting for more than half of all football revenue across Europe. The Premier League remained the continent’s biggest financial powerhouse, driven by lucrative broadcasting deals, commercial partnerships, and strong matchday income.
Despite record earnings, Deloitte cautioned that future growth could become more challenging as broadcasting revenues begin to level off and football schedules become increasingly crowded. The report noted that simply adding more matches is unlikely to provide a sustainable path for long-term revenue growth.
Germany’s Bundesliga surpassed €4 billion in annual revenue for the first time, while France’s Ligue 1 experienced a decline due to weaker commercial income. Several clubs outside Europe’s top divisions also continue to face financial pressures despite the overall increase in industry revenue.
Deloitte also highlighted that clubs are placing greater emphasis on diversifying their income through digital engagement, global fan experiences, sponsorships, and stadium development. Investments in women’s football and youth development are also expected to play a growing role in the sport’s financial future.
According to the report, the next phase of European football’s growth will depend on innovation, sustainable business strategies, and maintaining competitive balance, rather than relying solely on higher broadcasting revenues or expanding the match calendar.
