Popular Chicken Burgers Recalled Across Canada Over Undeclared Egg

Canadian food safety authorities have issued a nationwide recall for a popular brand of chicken burgers after an undeclared egg ingredient was found in the product. The recall is aimed at protecting consumers who have egg allergies or sensitivities, as consuming the affected product could trigger allergic reactions.
The recall involves Compliments Smashed 100% Chicken Burgers, manufactured by Leadbetter Foods Inc. and sold through Sobeys-owned grocery stores across Canada. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the product contains egg that is not declared on the label, making it unsafe for people who rely on ingredient information to avoid allergens.
The CFIA has classified the action as a Class 2 recall, indicating a moderate health risk. While the product is not expected to pose a danger to most consumers, individuals with an egg allergy could experience reactions ranging from mild symptoms to severe allergic responses if they consume it.
The affected product is the 680-gram package of Compliments Smashed 100% Chicken Burgers. Officials have instructed retailers to immediately stop selling or distributing the product and remove it from store shelves. Consumers who have purchased the burgers are advised not to eat them and should either return them to the place of purchase or dispose of them safely.
Food safety experts emphasize that accurate allergen labelling is critical, as undeclared ingredients remain one of the leading causes of food recalls in Canada. Even small amounts of an undeclared allergen can cause serious health complications for sensitive individuals, making proper ingredient disclosure essential.
The CFIA said its investigation is ongoing and is working to ensure all affected products have been removed from the marketplace. Authorities have not reported any confirmed illnesses linked to the recalled burgers so far, but consumers experiencing symptoms of an allergic reaction after eating the product are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
