Ford Motor Co. has recalled more than half a million Bronco SUVs in Canada and the United States after identifying an engine-compartment wiring defect that could cause a short circuit and increase the risk of fire.
The recall covers 565,691 Ford Bronco and Bronco Raptor vehicles from model years 2021 through 2026 in the United States. In Canada, Ford says 36,061 vehicles are affected as part of the broader recall.
According to safety regulators, the problem involves insufficient protection around an engine wiring harness. Contact with surrounding components can damage the harness and expose electrical wires, potentially causing a short circuit. A short circuit can generate excessive heat or sparks and, in some cases, lead to an engine-compartment fire.
Drivers may notice warning signs including smoke entering through the air vents or a warning message appearing on the dashboard. In more serious cases, flames could emerge from the passenger side of the engine compartment. Ford estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles may have the defect.
Ford said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with the issue. The company has developed a permanent repair, and affected owners will be able to take their vehicles to an authorized Ford dealership, where additional protective covering will be installed around the wiring harness free of charge.
Ford’s recall identification number is 26S55, while the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has assigned campaign number 26V468. U.S. owner notification letters are expected to begin going out in late August.
Owners are advised to check their vehicle identification number (VIN) to determine whether their Bronco is included in the recall and to arrange the necessary repair once notified.
