Air Canada Expands Accessibility Policy, Allows Up to Three Mobility Aids on Flights

Air Canada has introduced a significant enhancement to its accessibility policy, announcing that passengers with disabilities will now be permitted to travel with up to three mobility aids free of charge. The updated policy is designed to improve accessibility and provide greater flexibility for travelers who rely on multiple assistive devices during their journey.
Under the revised rules, customers can bring a combination of mobility equipment such as manual or powered wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, transfer chairs, or other approved assistive devices. The airline said the policy recognizes that many passengers require more than one mobility aid to travel safely and comfortably, particularly on longer or international journeys.
According to Air Canada, the expansion reflects its ongoing commitment to removing barriers for passengers with disabilities and ensuring that air travel is more inclusive. The airline added that it has been working closely with disability advocacy organizations and accessibility experts to strengthen its customer service standards and improve the travel experience for passengers with mobility needs.
In addition to the increased allowance, Air Canada said it will continue investing in employee training to ensure staff are better equipped to handle mobility equipment with care and provide appropriate assistance throughout the travel process. The carrier also emphasized the importance of safely transporting mobility devices, which are often customized and essential to passengers’ independence.
Accessibility advocates welcomed the announcement, calling it a meaningful step toward more inclusive air travel. However, they stressed that airlines must continue improving the handling of mobility aids, as damaged or delayed equipment can leave passengers stranded and significantly disrupt their travel plans.
The updated policy comes as airlines across Canada face increasing expectations to strengthen accessibility services following recommendations from disability rights organizations and federal regulators. Air Canada said the new measure is now in effect across its domestic and international network, and passengers are encouraged to notify the airline of their mobility equipment requirements in advance to help ensure seamless travel arrangements.
